This is one of 93 riding briefs that will be published ahead of the 2024 provincial election.
richmond-steveston
  • Incumbent: Kelly Greene (NDP | 2020)
  • Candidates:
    • NDP: Kelly Greene
    • Conservative: Michelle Mollineaux
    • Green: Eloide Vaudandaine
    • Independent: Jackie Lee
  • 2020 Results:
    • NDP – 52%
    • Liberal – 46%
  • Description:
    • Spanning the southwest end of Richmond, Richmond-Steveston is the most white out of the city’s 4 ridings. It also has the largest Japanese community of any riding in British Columbia and is host to an array of cultural institutions for them. Former school board trustee and incumbent MLA Kelly Greene is reoffering for the NDP, while the Conservatives have put up Michelle Mollineaux, a businesswoman and former Vancouver city council candidate. Rounding out the list is Independent Jackie Lee, the second of two ex-United orphans in the city of Richmond.
    • The riding should primarily be understood as three distinct neighbourhoods - Seafair, which is everything west of Number 1 Road and north of Steveston Highway; Steveston South, which is everything south of Steveston Highway and west of Number 3 Road; and Steveston North, which has everything west of Number 3 Road and north of the Highway.
    • The NDP’s strength is concentrated in the southwestern end of the riding, where co-ops and general social liberalism and diversity give left-leaning parties a boost. In contrast, the BC Liberals did best in the northeast end of the riding, which is also more Chinese. There, Jackie will tussle with Mollineaux for votes closer to Blundell and between Number 2 and Number 3 Road.
    • John Yap, former Party President of BC United, MLA for Richmond-Steveston, and Lee’s mentor will also provide some organizational chops behind the scenes. Expect a competitive race between Greene and Mollineaux, with Lee’s performance determining who makes it to Victoria.
