CFO, Beedie
Age 39
What career highlight are you most proud of?
Elevating Beedie’s finance and accounting department to be a strategic partner across the business. When I started at the company it was largely a back-office function, but I could see the opportunity to add so much more value. I was able to capitalize on the rapid growth and the corresponding changes throughout the company to show how my team could improve decision-making and collaboration. It took time to earn trust and prove the value, and there is always room for further improvement, but I now see our group engaged across the company and delivering excellent results daily.
What has been your toughest business or professional decision to date?
I struggled during COVID to juggle professional growth while being a present, thoughtful father to my young daughters. Eventually, I realized I couldn’t do everything. I was waking up in the middle of most nights thinking about work, trying to solve everything the way I always have: By persevering and working harder. This was no longer an effective strategy, and to do more, I needed to do less. I decided what truly mattered and was within my control and let everything else go. This shift ultimately made me more effective professionally and allowed me to be there for my family.
How do you lead?
I adapt my leadership style to the situation and individuals I am working with. This requires a people-focused approach where I actively seek the input and advice of others to inform my understanding of the current environment, and the best course of action. My success is closely tied to the success of my team, so it is critical that everyone feels engaged in the business and understands the role they play in driving positive change.
What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned in business?
Success in business is based on relationships, trust and integrity. You can be the smartest person in the room, but it doesn’t matter if you can’t connect with those around you, form a baseline of trust, and find ways to work together towards a common goal. In my role, it is especially important to invest time in understanding the underlying requirements and the motivations of the people involved so I can effectively support the business.
Best piece of advice ever received?
Before I joined Beedie, a local entrepreneur encouraged me to keep my eyes open and, if I saw an opportunity to lead, to not wait for someone to ask me or give permission. Just jump in and take it. I leaned on this advice regularly as I found my footing at Beedie and looked for opportunities to help the organization grow and improve.
What is your definition of success?
Success is the alignment of goals and outcomes. To achieve this, you must have clear goals and consistently recalibrate to the current requirements to ensure you’re reaching the desired outcome.
What are you most passionate about outside of work?
In Vancouver, we are incredibly fortunate to have the mountains and ocean right at our doorstep. This opens so many possibilities to explore the outdoors through world-class skiing, mountain biking, hiking and watersports. I find these activities are the perfect counterbalance to the hours spent in the office, providing physical challenge, a healthy dose of adrenaline and good times with friends. More recently, I have been introducing my daughters to these activities which is creating a new way for us to connect and spend time together.
What’s left to accomplish?
Looking forward, I want to shift my focus to offering the same opportunities to others that I was privileged enough to have. For the last 16 years I’ve been hyper focused on advancing and developing my own career, benefiting from the many people who lifted me up along the way. I hope to support others by helping to develop those around me, and by finding new ways to contribute to the communities I live and work in.
Is there anyone you would like to thank or acknowledge?
My wife, Shelane Wiseman, who has supported me so fully while also pursuing her own successful career. Mom, dad and my two sisters for keeping me balanced and accountable. Professionally, I have been fortunate to be surrounded by an exceptional group of mentors, peers and friends. In particular, Ryan Beedie, Dave Pearson, Todd Yuen and the entire executive team at Beedie. It is special to work alongside such a talented group who are constantly driving towards success and also know how to have fun. Finally, Beedie’s finance and accounting team for their hard work and putting my vision into action.
