Without enough court capacity to handle B.C.’s growing population and therefore increased crime, the Union of B.C. Municipalities is asking Victoria to identify current gaps in service.
Moreover, asked the resolution put forward by Langley City at the UBCM’s annual general meeting in Vancouver Sept. 20, a shortage in provincial court capacity would harm those awaiting court judgments, lead to inefficient use of police time for travel and greater challenges for those with limited access to public transit or transportation.
The resolution said the province has invested in some courthouses but said specific investments don’t benefit all British Columbians or meet service level requirements.
Langley Coun. Paul Albrecht said the province needs to identify and address current gaps in service in the provincial courts and to release an updated courthouse capital asset management plan to reflect new growth projections and future service level needs.
