Luck has run out for some workers at the British Columbia Lottery Corporation workers as the gaming organization cuts jobs and slashes operating costs.

BCLC announced April 4 that 67 people would lose their positions with the Crown corporation while it tries to reduce its budget by $20 million.

The Vancouver office is losing 33 people while the Kamloops office has been hit with 29 layoffs. Almost half of BCLC’s staff works out of Kamloops, while about one-third are in Vancouver.

“These kinds of decisions are difficult for any business, but they are the right decisions to best position BCLC to continue delivering strong net income to benefit British Columbians,” BCLC interim president Jim Lightbody said in a statement.

“BCLC has been a successful organization for many years, however, we have a systemic issue that all gaming jurisdictions are facing and that is a mature marketplace with rising operating costs and marginal revenue growth.”

BCLC's previous president and CEO, Michael Graydon, left the gaming organization in January for a job in the private sector.

The $20-million cuts also take aim at advertising and marketing, contractor expenses and the elimination of fleet vehicles.

BCLC had a net income worth about $1 billion last year.
