What career highlight are you most proud of?
Earning my certified fundraising executive designation stands out as a significant career milestone. Getting this certification was important because it validates my dedication to ethical and effective fundraising practices and my commitment to achieving excellence in the nonprofit field. I am proud to have this designation and put these letters behind my name.
What has been your toughest business or professional decision to date?
In today’s current landscape of healthcare philanthropy, it is often challenging to make decisions regarding our fundraising campaign efforts. With increasing demand for healthcare services, we have to prioritize specific areas of need while setting aside others that are equally important but less immediate.
How do you lead?
I lead with high expectations for both me and my team, emphasizing a collaborative, inclusive approach. I believe that achieving results and fostering individual growth go hand in hand. By coaching, offering guidance and removing roadblocks, my goal is for my team to feel empowered to excel, bring their strengths forward and shine in their roles.
What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned in business?
The power and importance of building authentic, trusting relationships based on transparency is paramount to success. In fundraising, stakeholders and donors want to create positive impacts in their community so staying true to the purpose and openly sharing goals and challenges is essential. Being transparent takes time but in the end, it fosters lasting and quality connections.
Best piece of advice ever received?
As a natural introvert, working in a role that requires constant community engagement and networking was challenging at first, and I often felt out of place putting myself out there. The advice to “embrace and lean into moments of discomfort” helped me to build strong, meaningful connections. Over time, attending events and creating connections no longer felt like just a job and made my work feel rewarding in ways that I had not anticipated.
What is your definition of success?
I’ve learned that success isn’t just measured by achievements, it’s also about the relationships we build and the lives we touch. In my work, success is being able to support positive health-care outcomes in the community and know that our efforts have made a positive difference in people’s lives. I take great pride in co-leading a successful capital campaign, raising $30 million in under three years for Burnaby Hospital’s redevelopment project.
What are you most passionate about outside of work?
Interior design. I really enjoy curating my space so that it reflects my personal style and is warm and inviting. When I travel, I’m always on the lookout for unique pieces to bring home. Each item has a story and reminds me of where I’ve been.
What’s left to accomplish?
I am not sure what the future holds for me personally or professionally but, I want to have a lasting, positive influence on the organizations and communities I serve and create a life that is filled with personal growth, joy and adventure.
Is there anyone you would like to thank or acknowledge?
There are many individuals who have provided a strong support system, shaping both my life and career. I’m especially grateful for my dad, whose resilience and positivity inspire me every day; my mom and aunt—both accomplished leaders—whose strong work ethic motivates me to grow and be my best; and my sister who attempts to keep me balanced and grounded. I’m thankful for my mentor, Kristy, whose guidance and belief in me continue to be invaluable. I’m fortunate to have these people and so many others in my life who cheer me on every step of the way.
