Principal, Citifund Capital Corporation
Age 39
What career highlight are you most proud of?
Achieving my original goal of becoming a partner of Citifund Capital. I was confident in myself from the beginning but becoming a co-owner of the brokerage was not a certainty. You learn a lot in this business in the first few years and it is rewarding to now be part of management and helping shape the new members of our team. I am proud that my work was recognized and I was welcomed into the business. It confirmed I was headed in the right direction and reconfirmed my confidence to extend my scope to take on new projects and ventures.
What has been your toughest business or professional decision to date?
The COVID pandemic was a challenge and not an enjoyable one. In the early days, we had lenders stress-testing every asset they lent on—assuming the worst. The potential for massive financial losses seemed imminent. As a boutique firm, we had to make some calls on manpower that were tough. That said, we didn’t panic and we weathered the storm. But looking back, it felt like the world was going to end and we had to make tough decisions with imperfect information.
How do you lead?
I lead by example. How can I ask for hard work from my team if I am not working hard myself. How can I ask something of someone that I have not done myself or am willing to do. When it comes to collaboration, I work to ensure my team has the tools they need to do their job well and give them the autonomy to take control of it. I try to be their biggest supporter.
What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned in business?
To never close a door. Great relationships are the key to great businesses and fostering relationships over time is a big part of that. While one transaction or project may not go as planned, don’t let the short-term frustration get the better of you. Treat people with respect, work hard, be truthful and play the long game. This is a small world and you don’t do yourself any favours burning a bridge.
Best piece of advice ever received?
“Wherever you want to go, you are not going to get there by yourself.” Teamwork is everything. Early in my working life, I was competing for a promotion with a close friend that I carpooled with everyday to work. Instead of avoiding the elephant in the room, we worked with each other to do better in the interview process. We critiqued each other and discussed strengths and weaknesses. We both became more aware of ourselves and better at our jobs while becoming very prepared for our interviews. In the long run, collaboration and group development will take you the furthest.
What is your definition of success?
In business, I see it as having earned respect from our employees, clients, colleagues and counterparts while striving to achieve our goals. Outside of that, it is a strong family.
What are you most passionate about outside of work?
My family. Anytime I am not working, I am with my family. (I do squeeze in some time for golf and the Minnesota Vikings!).
What’s left to accomplish?
I don’t even feel that I have scratched the surface. I still have the drive and we are surrounded by opportunity. My future will undoubtedly involve real estate and the betterment of the communities we live in.
Is there anyone you would like to thank or acknowledge?
First and foremost, my wife. Without Shelby’s support and care for our family, I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to excel. She is an integral part of my success. I am grateful to my athletic coaches and volunteers throughout my sports career, my three business partners, Henry, Kathy, all my friends and family—they have all helped me in different ways. I have developed some great industry relationships who have mentored me and I am forever grateful to them.
