The average weekly earnings for workers in B.C. was $900 in August, according to Statistics Canada data released October 30, which represents growth of 3.0% over the past 12 months.

Across the country, wages grew by 3.5% over the same period. The average weekly earnings in Canada was $943 – almost 5% higher than in this province.

The highest earnings in Canada continue to be seen in the mining, quarrying and oil and gas extraction sector, with the average growing a full 13.4% year-over-year to $2,115.

The lowest wages were in accommodation and food services, at $374, which was 3.4% higher than last year.

Almost all sectors saw growth in the month.

“…the trend [of increasing earnings across the country] – if it can be maintained – can certainly provide some encouragement, especially since nine out of the 10 largest industries surveyed saw increases on the year, with only the administrative support sector down by less than 1%,” said CIBC World Markets Economics’ Nick Exarhos.

Albertans continue to have the highest earnings in the country, with an average of $1,165 in August – a full 5.1% higher than last year’s figure of $1,108.

The lowest earnings were found in Prince Edward Island in August, with an average of $778. This is 3.8% higher than last years’ average of $759.

“Limited market reaction is expected,” Exarhos said.
