Independent mayoral candidate Bob Kasting announced November 6 that he is withdrawing from the race and that he will be supporting NPA candidate Kirk LaPointe.
Kasting, a practising lawyer, may be best known for having worked to prevent the Vancouver Park Board from widening bike paths along Kits Beach Park.
The former candidate had told Business in Vancouver that he had decided to run for mayor because he felt the city had “taken a wrong turn.”
“It has given over planning of the city’s development to the same large real estate developers who contribute generously to the coffers of the party in power,” he said.
“This is not permitted by law in provincial or federal politics and should not be permitted in civic politics.”
In addition to his law career and brief foray into politics, Kasting is also an Olympic bronze medalist in swimming, having participated in the summer games in Munich in 1972.
