Doug McCallum, the mayoral candidate for the Safe Surrey Coalition party, leads the pack in the upcoming Surrey municipal election.
An Insights West poll shows that 40% of Surrey residents are planning to vote for McCallum. Surrey First candidate Linda Hepner has the support of 32% of residents and Basinder Rasode, independent, follows with 21%. John Edwards has the support of 7% of those polled, and Vikram Bajwa has 1%.
But it is still too soon to call, and candidates still have the opportunity to change the tide.
“There are many residents of Surrey who have not been immersed in the mayoral campaign,” says Mario Canseco, Insights West’s vice-president, public affairs.
“The candidates need to establish a meaningful connection with the high number of residents who plan to vote, but have not settled on anyone yet.”
Respondents were asked which of the mayoral candidates would be better suited to handle a number of given issues, and the majority – between 58% and 67% – were not sure.
As far as what issues Surrey residents were most concerned with, crime topped the list, with 55% of respondents saying this was the biggest issue in the city. Transportation came in a distant second at 14%.
