As New Year’s Eve party hosts awake in 2015 and prepare to clear out the mess from the night before, they’ll have to one essential resolution to contend with — no more food waste in the garbage.
Metro Vancouver’s ban on food waste in garbage bins and landfills goes into effect January 1, 2015.
Violators will not face penalties for the first six months and enforcement will focus initially on supermarkets, restaurants and hotels.
But beginning in July, haulers who bring excess food scraps and organic waste to regional facilities will face fines.
According to the Metro Vancouver regional district, 95% of single-family homes in the region already have curbside collection of food and garden waste. The political body also reported it has one of the highest recycling rates in North America at 60%.
