The number of British Columbians receiving employment insurance (EI) benefits fell in June.

Statistics Canada reported August 23 that 55,600 British Columbians received EI benefits in June, down from 55,980 in May.

The 0.7% drop between May and June was slightly less than the 0.9% Canadian average drop.

The number of beneficiaries fell slightly in Nova Scotia, but was up in Ontario and Prince Edward Island.

The number of initial and renewal claims rose 3.4% to 231,600 in June, with more claims in New Brunswick, Alberta, Quebec and Manitoba, but fewer claims in P.E.I. while other provinces were little changed.

Across Canada, 507,570 people received EI in June, down from 512,090 in May.
