West Coast businesses may need a little extra help keeping out of the crosshairs of conmen.

Despite the fact only 5% of B.C. businesses perceive the threat of fraud to be high, one-third of West Coast companies admit to falling victim to a con at some point, according to a survey released by the Mustel Group and MNP on March 25.

But the poll showed some good news for Vancouver.

Respondents from B.C.'s biggest city reported the fewest cases of fraud in the province.

"We are not surprised that incidents of fraud are as high as they are," said Jackie Davies, partner and B.C. leader of MNP's Investigative and Forensic Services Group, in a statement.

"However we are concerned that so many of the respondents felt that the risk of fraud was low. Clearly there is a disconnect between the realities of fraud and perceptions of it."

Mustel polled 600 British Columbians to reach its conclusions. Out of the respondents, 400 were conducted online surveys and the remaining 200 were asked over the phone about their experiences.
