December 10 marks exactly one year since Canada Post announced several sweeping cost-cutting measures that included drastic cuts to service, and postal workers in Vancouver have chosen the anniversary to introduce an ad campaign to save door-to-door delivery.
The campaign is online and involves videos of postal workers discussing why home delivery is valuable and should be maintained.
CUPW Local 876, the union behind the initiative, said there are alternatives that should be explored.
“While Canadians face cuts, profitable new services like postal banking are not even being considered,” said the union’s president Kim Evans.
“We hope this campaign will help raise awareness that management and the government are wrong to cut delivery services.”
The postal workers are not alone in trying to fight the cuts. In January, Vancouver city council voted unanimously to call on the Federation of Canadian Municipalities to appeal to Canada Post not to cut home delivery.
