For Vancouverites making New Year’s resolutions over a career transition, new data shows jobs in software development, academics and machinery are projected to be the most in-demand over the next five years.

The number of jobs in Metro Vancouver is expected to grow from 1.37 million in 2014 to 1.43 million by 2020, according to numbers released by CareerBuilder.ca and Economic Modeling Specialists Intl. Monday (December 29).

That 5% growth in jobs puts the region in the middle of the pack of major Canadian metropolitan areas.

Edmonton leads the country with job growth projected to be at 8% between 2014 and 2020. In fact, most job growth in major cities is expected to occur in Western Canada, as Calgary (7%), Regina (6%) and Saskatoon (6%) all placed at the top.

Quebec City (4%) and Halifax (3%) ranked at the bottom.

The most in-demand jobs in Metro Vancouver include software engineers and designers, which is expected to grow by 16% over the next five years as the market expands from 7,300 positions to 8,500.

The region can also expect to welcome more university professors, as that field is projected to grow 15%, from 8,100 in 2014 to 9,300 by 2020.

Welders and machine operators (14%), shippers and receivers (12%) and IT analysts and consultants (12%) round out the top five most in-demand positions over the next five years.
