Vancouver mining mogul and Lionsgate Films founder Frank Giustra is helping to bankroll a sequel of the film Blade Runner.

Vancouver-based Thunderbird Films announced Wednesday that Giustra has become a major investor in Thunderbird, which has a 50% stake in the Blade Runner franchise.

Director Ridley Scott confirmed last summer he is working on a follow-up to the 1982 science-fiction film starring Harrison Ford.

In addition to its involvement in the Blade Runner franchise, Thunderbird will also focus on building its television operations.

“As we look to expand our business and step up production, Frank’s support ensures that we can maintain our independence and parlay incredible opportunities,” said Thunderbird co-founder Tim Gamble.

Giustra founded Lionsgate Films and sits on the production company’s board of directors. He is also chairman and president of Fiore Capital Corporation, a private financial advisory firm.

Thunderbird Films finances, produces and distributes Canadian film and TV productions. Its TV series include Coldsquad and Da Vinci’s Inquest. Thunderbird Films has more than 400 hours of content on U.S. television.
