Vancouver mining giant Teck Resources Ltd. (TSX:TCK) is donating $1 million to help complete a B.C. section of the 23,000-kilometre Trans Canada Trail (www.tctrail.ca), the longest recreational trail in the world, in the Kootenays.

Teck's investment will help complete B.C. sections of the multi-use trail by connecting Trail, Cranbrook, Kimberley, Fernie, Sparwood and Elkford.

"The Trans Canada Trail is part of our shared Canadian heritage, linking people and communities from coast to coast," Teck CEO Don Lindsay said in a press release.

"Many of our employees live and work in the Kootenays, and this investment will help to connect their communities and families, while also helping to build this national legacy for all Canadians."

Work on the trail started in 1992. It runs west to east from Vancouver Island to Newfoundland and north to south from Inuvik to Edmonton. It is 73% finished and is scheduled to be completed in 2017.

"We are proud to have Teck join other Chapter 150 donors who are committed to connecting the Trail by Canada's 150th birthday in 2017," said TCT CEO Deborah Apps. "Teck's contribution will help us write another important chapter of this national story and will benefit communities in the Kootenays for generations to come."

The trail is multi-use and can be travelled by foot, bicycle, horseback or cross-country skis.
