A fish processing plant in Richmond that is the first to be built under the city’s green roof design guidelines has begun operations, the company announced this week.

Designed and built by Hungerford Properties, Albion Fisheries’ new 65,300-square-foot plant on No. 6 Road includes a storm-water management system, permeable paving and landscaping designed with trees that provide a canopy over vehicle parking areas.

It also features a Thermoplastic Polyolefin (TPO) roof that reduces the heat island effect, which results in urban areas from buildings retaining heat.

“We’re delighted that Albion Fisheries has demonstrated its commitment to sustainability and to Richmond’s goal of fostering sustainable building practices by designing a facility that meets the city’s green roof alternatives and incorporates a storm water capture system and enhanced landscaping features,” said Mayor Malcolm Brodie.

“Most industrial buildings are simple boxes,” said Hungerford partner Michael Hungerford. “But this is the world-class, high-performance model. It’s got all the bells and whistles, and it sets new standards for sustainability as well as for health and cleanliness from an operations standpoint.”
