Metro Vancouver has been awarded a $75,000 grant to begin developing a network of charging stations for electric vehicles, in collaboration with its member municipalities.
The grant comes from the province’s Community Charging Infrastructure Fund, and furthers Metro Vancouver’s goal of identifying 75 to 150 highly-visible host sites for electric vehicle chargers.
“Our goal is to facilitate the creation of a network of charging stations, installed at places like malls, theatres and tourism destinations,” said Metro Vancouver chairman Greg Moore.
“Making charging stations visible and accessible will build confidence in electric vehicles and will promote clean transport and clean air.”
The City of Vancouver is one of the 14 member municipalities that will split the grant money, which will be spent to pursue private and public sector commitment to the charging stations.
Earlier this year, the City of Vancouver launched an $800,000 pilot program to expand electric charging stations across the city to encourage the use of zero-emission vehicles.
Up to 67 charging posts are expected to be installed across the city by the end of 2013.
