Former hockey star and environmental activist Scott Niedermayer came out against the Northern Gateway pipeline August 27 by issuing a public appeal on the World Wildlife Fund Canada (WWF) website.

"WWF and the Coastal First Nations have sounded powerful messages about the unacceptable risk this project poses to the Great Bear, our Canadian treasure," Niedermayer wrote.

"August 31 is the deadline for public comment to the joint review panel. This body is charged with assessing whether the Northern Gateway project is in Canada's best interest. Please take a few moments to register your comments online right now."

Business in Vancouver reported last August that Niedermayer, who won an Olympic gold medal for hockey at Vancouver's 2010 Games, had joined with the WWF to become Canada's freshwater ambassador, with a focus on the Pacific region.

He then joined the Ktunaxa Nation and the NDP in November to oppose the Jumbo ski resort in the Kootenays that developer Glacier Resorts Ltd. intends to build.
