Education

James Rout has been appointed associate vice-president, education support and innovation, at British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT). Rout joined BCIT as director of library services on April 1, 2016. Rout has more than 15 years of leadership experience in higher education in areas including teaching and learning, libraries, archives and educational technology support services. Rout previously worked as associate vice-president, learning services and information technologies at Emily Carr University (ECU) and was involved with planning the new ECU campus as well as planning for a new library and archives facility in the Kinnear Centre for Innovation and Creativity during his time at the Banff Centre.

Health/Medical

Lyall D. Knott has been elected to the board of directors of the Sullivan Urology Research, Education and Development Foundation, which supervises a fund dedicated to research, education and development of new technology in the field of urology. The foundation’s board includes S. Larry Goldenberg, Martin Gleave, Jamie Wright, Brian Shankaruk and Bob Bray. Patrons of the foundation are Rick Hansen, Bob Lee, George Richards, Gordon Diamond and Syd Belzberg

Legal

Kathy Tang and Tariq Teja have joined Miller Thomson LLP’s Vancouver office as associate counsel and associate, respectively. Tang is a member of the firm’s capital markets and securities group, working in the areas of securities, corporate finance and corporate/commercial law. She has extensive transactional experience, assisting clients with a variety of matters such as initial public offerings, private placements, stock exchange listing applications, reverse takeovers and corporate restructurings. Teja is a member of the commercial litigation group and has a wide-ranging practice which includes civil and commercial litigation. Prior to joining the firm, Tariq worked for the provincial government assisting with settlement negotiations in a substantial class-action lawsuit involving a variety of personal injury and medical negligence claims.

Media

Louise Clark, president and executive producer, Lark Productions, has been appointed to the board of directors at Creative BC. Prior to founding Lark Productions in Vancouver, Clark began her career in media at the National Film Board of Canada.

Non-profit

Anne Cooper has been appointed board chair at Decoda Literacy Solutions. Cooper is the former superintendent of schools in school district #19 (Revelstoke). She currently serves as a member of the Provincial Child Care Council which supports the Ministry of Children and Families, a member of the Human Early Learning Partnership’s middle years development instrument advisory committee and the Columbia Basin Trust’s social advisory committee.

Jan Hawkins and Jennifer Johnson have been appointed director, fundraising, and fundraising events manager, respectively, at the Looking Glass Foundation for Eating Disorders. Hawkins previously served as director of development, BC & Alberta Guide Dogs, and has also held positions at the BCIT Foundation and Canadian Blood Services. Johnson was previously events manager, Greater Vancouver Board of Trade, and has held roles in marketing and events in the technology industry. 

Technology

Charlie Sabean, vice-president, Surrey-based Modern Systems Management Ltd., has been appointed to the board of directors of the InsideIQ Building Automation Alliance. An international alliance of independent building automation contractors, InsideIQ member firms represent common automation and security system platforms. Sabean will serve as business development committee chairman for the alliance.

Willie Wagen has been appointed global vice-president of sales and marketing and managing director Europe for Corvus Energy Inc. Before joining Corvus, Wagen held a variety of sales and business development leadership positions over his nine years at Wärtsilä, most recently as head of the market innovation department, focused on the global marine and oil and gas industries. Prior to Wärtsilä, Wagen was at Aker Solutions. Wagen will be based out of the Corvus Energy European headquarters in Bergen, Norway.

Hats Off

Amazon donated more than $6,700 to Surrey Libraries in support of its Read to Baby (R2B) program. R2B is a family literacy initiative launched in 2014 by Surrey Libraries that introduces parents of newborns to the benefits of early and frequent reading to infants. Amazon’s donation will specifically fund the first-ever R2B keepsake kits for the aboriginal community.

Westminster Savings will donate $75,000 each to Arts Umbrella, Special Olympics BC and KidSport BC from 2017 through 2019. Funding for these organizations will support after-school arts programs for vulnerable children, enhance programs for athletes with intellectual disabilities and provide sport registration fees for kids who otherwise could not afford to participate.

Attendees at the BC Cancer Foundation’s annual black tie Inspiration Gala at the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver donated $3.05 million to the charity. The funds were raised to support the launch of NETRACER, a world-class radionuclide therapy program that benefits patients with neuroendocrine cancers (NETs) and will be developed to benefit other cancer types. Patients with NETs have previously had to travel out of province and out of country for life-saving treatment. NETRACER and its world-class therapy that will be made available to B.C. patients within the next year.

Phoenix Truck and Crane donated $30,500 to Eagle Ridge Hospital Foundation. The funds will be used to create new fitness and social coffee house rooms for the 64 patients who wish to achieve their wellness goals at Fraser Health’s three mental health lodges on the Riverview grounds in Coquitlam. 

Attendees at the Canadian Insurance Claims Managers Association’s (CICMA) annual golf tournament donated $18,155 to the Children’s Wish Foundation of Canada’s B.C. and Yukon chapter. This is the fourth year the CICMA donated proceeds from its golf tournament toward granting the wishes of local children.

Coast Capital Savings donated $10,000 to the Cowichan Therapeutic Riding Association, enabling the association to continue to provide therapeutic riding and equine-based wellness programs for youth with disabilities in the Cowichan region.

Greg Peet and Glenn Walsh have each donated $1 million to University of British Columbia (UBC). Peet, a UBC Sauder School of Business alumnus and technology entrepreneur, gave $1 million to a seed fund run by entrepreneurship@UBC (e@UBC), equalling a $1 million donation from Walsh, a faculty of applied science alumnus and founder of mining construction company, the Tercon Group. •
