While most Canadians are still using traditional means to find jobs, more and more young and higher-educated Canadians are now turning to social media to land employment, according to a Randstad Canada survey.

The survey found that online jobboards (72%) and newspaper advertisements (55%) are still the most common places Canadians look for jobs, with only 22% of Canadians using social media sites in their job hunting.

However, it found that of the groups turning to social media channels, there were disproportionately high amounts of younger and highly educated Canadians.

Jan Hein Bax, president of Randstad Canada, noted that job-hunting methods are evolving to reflect new technologies.

“In past years, there was a heavy dependence on job boards, but now social media is becoming an integral part of finding a job,” Bax said. “These days, recruiters who are not using these tools are falling behind. Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter are key for job-seekers and can sometimes offer more traffic than a job board.”
