Success can bring its own demons, according to real estate marketer and investor Cam Good.
“Any time one of my businesses grows to a certain level or has a certain number of employees or makes a certain amount of money or I live in a certain house … it feels uncomfortable in some way, even though it’s a really positive thing.”
Good said that discomfort of leaving “the pack” behind creates risks.
“I’ve caught myself from time to time over the years sabotaging myself to slow it down, to stop.”
Good said he has learned to be aware of the risk so he can withstand “the magnetic pull back toward the pack,” which he attributes to a combination of peer pressure and self-doubt.
He said he has learned to fight that pull by focusing on riding – and not fighting – momentum. “When you have [momentum], recognize it and continue with it and don’t necessarily question it. Just allow success to happen to you rather than wondering if that’s enough, if I deserve it, all of those sort of questioning things, because they’re just inefficient.”
But Good added that it’s a lesson he has to keep re-learning
“You’ve just got to watch yourself and be aware, and through that awareness alone you’ll catch yourself doing little things that are stopping you from being more successful,” he said. “And through awareness alone you can kind of nip [self-sabotage] in the bud.” •
