Construction intentions in B.C. rose 15.2% to $856 million in April, year over year, according to Statistics Canada numbers released today.

The province saw a 54.8% rise in non-residential construction intentions for the month and a 2.4% drop in residential construction intentions.

For the same period, the value of Vancouver and Victoria building permits increased 15.2% and 2.2%, respectively.

However, in Kelowna and Abbotsford-Mission, construction intentions dropped 19.8% and 25.8%, respectively.

Nationally, construction intentions fell 5.2% to $6.5 billion in April, following two consecutive monthly increases. The national decline was largely caused by a drop in construction intentions for institutional buildings and multi-family homes in Quebec.

In March, the value of Vancouver’s building permits dropped 14.7% from the month prior.
