The City of Vancouver has approved a controversial condo development, fiercely opposed by those who live nearby, which has followed due planning process and city guidelines to the letter.
Vancouver city council on April 17 approved rezoning for Rize Alliance Properties Ltd.’s controversial 19-storey, 241-home tower on Kingsway Avenue at Broadway.
Rize owner Will Lin told Business in Vancouver last month that he was confident city hall would approve rezoning for the project – despite what would be six nights of hearings where 139 speakers virtually unanimously panned the proposed highrise.
Lin’s confidence stemmed from being involved with the city during the drafting of the Mount Pleasant Community Plan and following that plan in the project’s design.
“[Opponents] are entitled to voice opinion,” Lin told BIV. “In the staff report, it is clearly stated that there are 4,000 feedbacks to the city about our project and over half are in favour. This is clearly the case that the people who are against are louder and more passionate, capturing more of the media attention.”
