The B.C. government is offering developers incentives to build safer, more accessible homes.

The SAFERhome Standards Society will receive a $60,000 grant from the government to fund a two-year pilot project to build more accessible homes. Under that pilot program, developers will be eligible for grants of $600 per unit on new low-rise, multi-unit housing projects that include safety and accessibility features such as wider doors, easier access to light switches and reduced tripping hazards.

"Implementing the SAFERhome standards is cost-effective both for developers and owners," said Patrick Simpson, executive director for SAFERhome Standards Society.

"The project will allow us to quantify the actual costs and benefits to developers. For homeowners, the cost savings come from eliminating the need to make major renovations to the home as lifestyle needs change."

Developers interested in participating in the program can apply directly to the SAFERhome Standards Society.http://www.saferhomesociety.com
