The Tahltan First Nation continue to leverage their expertise in the mining sector by getting in on the mine equipment and technology sales business.
The Tahltan Nation Development Corporation (TNDC) has partnered with Sandvik to become a reseller of mining equipment, parts, tools and digital technology for the mining sector in B.C. and the Yukon. Sanvik is a Swedish engineering company that specializes in mining and construction.
The TNDC will become an official Sandvik reseller, capitalizing on the growth of mining in the Yukon and Northwestern B.C.
“TNDC is the perfect partner for Sandvik in this rapidly developing region,” Sandvik Canada’s managing director, Peter Corcoran, said in a press release.
“Sandvik is committed to continuous improvement in the area of sustainability, which includes economic sustainability for the communities surrounding mining operations that Sandvik is involved in, and TNDC has demonstrated that they are highly capable of bringing this value back to the communities.”
“The future of mining lies in technology and sustainability,” said Paul Gruner, TNDC’s chief executive officer. “Coupled with the outlook for the sector and our pending expansion of fibre optics in the region, TNDC is keen to be at the forefront through this partnership with Sandvik.”
Tahltan traditional territory encompasses about 70% of the so-called Golden Triangle – a region rich in precious and base metals in Northwestern B.C.
The region has seen a boom in exploration and mining in recent years, facilitated in part by the Tahltan’s support for and experience in mining. The Yukon has likewise been experiencing a boom in exploration and mining.
“As the regions are developed, TNDC is focused on ensuring its participation and positioning the surrounding communities for sustainable economic activity,” the TNDC said in its news release.
“The TNDC provides services to the resource exploration, mine development, mining, construction, forestry, power, and infrastructure sectors and in doing so creates employment, training and contracting opportunities to Tahltans. As mines are often located in remote Indigenous communities, the introduction of technology presents tremendous potential for exciting new career opportunities for community members.
"TNDC and Sandvik will work together to bring these technologies to the region, supporting creation of a technologically advanced mining jurisdiction that brings exciting employment and upskilling opportunities for the ambitious local workforce.”
