In a last-minute deal, independent bookstore Black Bond Books will take over operations at Book Warehouse's West Broadway location.

In March, Book Warehouse announced that it would shutter its three Vancouver stores and one North Vancouver store as soon as it had sold off its inventory.

However, the company announced this morning that Black Bond Books will take over the West Broadway store June 1.

Despite the ownership change, the bookstore will continue to operate as a Book Warehouse.

"This is part of the heritage," Black Bond Books co-owner Cathy Jesson told Business in Vancouver Wednesday.

In a statement, Book Warehouse owner Sharman King said he was "thrilled" with the sale.

"For over three decades Vancouver book lovers have been finding books and bargains at 632 West Broadway," he said. "We're delighted the tradition will continue in the good hands of Black Bond Books."

Black Bond Books opened its first B.C. store in 1972 and now operates 11 Lower Mainland locations, from Mission to Lynn Valley.

The family-run firm is owned by Cathy Jesson and Mel Jesson. Their daughter Caitlin Jesson has assumed management of the West Broadway Book Warehouse location.
