Employees at the Shoppers Drug Mart (TSX:SC) on Davie Street voted 93% in favour of strike action last week.

The workers are part of Canada’s largest private-sector union, United Food and Commercial Workers and are part of Local 1518.

The workers’ contract expired on April 30, 2012, and bargaining has been ongoing since last year, the union noted in a release.

The parties last met in March with the assistance of mediator Grant MacArthur, at which time the employer’s last offer failed to address the majority of the members’ proposals, the union said.

The union’s negotiating committee’s main issue is to get “fair and equitable wage increases with retroactive pay for all members,” it said.

Negotiations with the store will resume on May 6 with the assistance of Grant MacArthur, according to the union.

The union believes that the overwhelming support for a strike will strengthen its hand in negotiations with the employer.
