What do you use to prepare your morning brew? If your day starts with popping a single-serve K-Cup into a Keurig MINI Brewer Plus, model number K10 (formerly model number B31), you may need to contact the manufacturer.
Keurig has issued a safety recall notice after receiving several reports of minor burns experienced by Canadian users of the machine, according to Health Canada.
“Water [in the MINI Plus brewer] can overheat during the brewing process, spray out and burn consumers,” said Health Canada in a December 23 recall and alert announcement.
“Keurig has received 25 reports of incidents involving liquid spraying from the product in Canada, which resulted in 17 minor burns. Health Canada has not received any reports of consumer incidents or injuries related to the use of the brewers.”
In the United States, there have been around 90 injuries reported.
There are an estimated 563,892 machines in Canada and almost 6 million in the U.S.
Keurig asks that customers with the machines in question contact its toll-free MINI Brewer Plus hotline at 1-844-255-7886 to receive a free repair kit.
“In the meantime, you can continue to use your brewer,” Keurig said in its safety recall notice. “We recommend you avoid brewing more than two cups in rapid succession and maintain an arm’s length distance from the brewer during the brewing process.”
Keurig received negative press in British Columbia in November when Vancouver’s Granville Island Coffee joined Toronto’s Club Coffee in denouncing Keurig for what the two companies said were monopolistic practices in the single-serve pod market.
Club Coffee filed a report November 13 with the Competition Bureau of Canada asking for the government to investigate the coffee giant. This was after launching a $600 million lawsuit in early October.
The lawsuit alleged Keurig misled customers by telling them that their machines could only use pods produced by that company.
Keurig responded by saying the lawsuit was without merit.
