Retail giant Sears Canada has announced the closure of 10 stores across Canada, including three in British Columbia.
The location at Brentwood Town Centre is the only Lower Mainland store affected. Nanaimo’s North Town Centre and a location in Kelowna will also be shuttered.
The closures will affect 1,300 employees across the country. At Brentwood, 99 employees will lose their jobs, most of whom are part-time. Sixty nine employees in Kelowna and 104 in Nanaimo will also be laid off, for a total of 272 workers across the province.
The closures come just over three months after the company announced June 22 it was seeking creditor arrangement. At that time, it announced the layoffs of 2,900 workers and the closure of 20 full-line stores, 15 Home locations, 10 outlets and 14 Hometown stores. The only B.C. locations included in this original announcement were Abbotsford’s Sears Outlet, the Aberdeen Mall location in Kamloops and hometown locations in Creston, Grand Forks and Sechelt.
The other stores slated for closure across Canada are:
- Polo Park, Winnipeg, Manitoba;
- Lime Ridge Mall, Hamilton, Ontario;
- Oakville Place, Oakville, Ontario;
- Fairview Mall, North York, Ontario;
- Scarborough Town Centre, Scarborough, Ontario;
- Fairview Pointe-Claire, Quebec; and
- Avalon Mall, St. John’s, Newfoundland.
(A previous version of this story had erroneously identified Aberdeen Mall as being in Kelowna. The mall is located in Kamloops.)
