Apple Inc. (Nasdaq: AAPL) is firming up its Vancouver presence with the acquisition of app development service Buddybuild.
“We've always been proud to be a Canadian company, so we're also pleased that we will be staying right here in Vancouver — a hotbed of developer and engineering talent,” the company said in a January 2 blog post.
The company was founded in October 2015 by Dennis Pilarinos and Christopher Stott, both of whom previously worked as engineers at Amazon (Nasdaq: AMZN).
In May 2016 Buddybuild announced it had raised US$7.6 million in Series A funding.
Buddybuild allows app developers to improve their workflow and ease integration with different software platforms, such as the workplace messaging service Slack.
Buddybuild’s workforce will join Apple’s Xcode engineering group, which supports iOS and other operating systems for the tech giant’s various devices.
While Buddybuild currently supports both iOS and Android development, the deal with Apple means it will discontinue Android app development effective March 1.
It is also no longer accepting new customers although present customers will continue to receive services.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed
