A B.C. startup that uses smartphones to help doctors screen for and detect skin cancer has raised $8.6 million in financing.
MetaOptima Technology Inc. is known for its MoleScope device, which attaches to a smartphone to provide a high-resolution view of the skin through magnification and specialized lighting.
The images can then be sent to a dermatologist, essentially eliminating months of wait time for a specialist visit.
Australia-based Skip Capital and Air Tree Ventures led this most recent funding round, announced in early July.
“We want to be in every major dermatology centre and skin cancer clinic in Australia, and we’re well on track to making that a reality,” MetaOptima CEO and co-founder Maryam Sadeghi, a BIV Forty Under 40 winner, said in a statement.
Skip Capital co-founder Scott Farquhar and AirTree Ventures founder Daniel Petre are joining MetaOptima’s board as a result of the deal.
