A New York-based content management software company is working with B.C.’s First Peoples’ Cultural Council (FPCC) on an initiative to preserve Indigenous languages digitally.
FPCC will use FirstVoices, an online Indigenous language preservation domain, on Nuxeo’s content services platform to archive and document B.C.’s many Indigenous languages.
FirstVoices was launched in 2003. The current version stores approximately 400,000 language assets, including text entries, audio recordings and videos.
Nuxeo’s clients include Verizon (NYSE:VZ), Electronic Arts (Nasdaq:EA) and the U.S. Department of Defense.
Tracey Herbert, FPCC’s CEO, noted in a June 12 press release how important it was to find a suitable platform for a project spanning multiple communities.
“It has always been important to us that our stakeholder groups be in control of their own language data,” said Herbert, “including who has access.”
Herbert added that the Nuxeo platform turned out to be ideal for developing FirstVoices 2.0, especially for storing and managing cultural assets.
“We found Nuxeo to be the best platform to address many key cultural considerations important to First Nations communities,” said Herbert.
Nuxeo’s CEO Eric Barroca said the company’s open-source approach was “not only philosophically aligned with FirstVoices but it also enabled [the FPCC] to configure the Nuxeo platform … to serve [its] communities in a manner that is modern and secure.”
