The B.C. government will invest $113 million into helping Emily Carr University of Art + Design (ECUAD) build a new $134 million, 286,300 square-foot campus along Great Northern Way, Premier Christy Clark announced January 23.
Construction is set to start in May 2014 and is expected to be complete by July 2016, creating an estimated 1,500 jobs during construction.
ECUAD and other donors are expected to contribute additional funds towards the ultimate cost.
“Emily Carr University had outgrown its old home,” said Clark. “Just as their graduates move onto bigger and better career options, we’re pleased to help the university move into a bigger and better home.”
ECUAD already has a presence along Great Northern Way, on 18 acres of land that Finning International (TSX:FTT) donated in 2001. ECUAD is a 25% shareholder in that land, which is known as the Great Northern Way Campus, along with the British Columbia Institute of Technology, the University of British Columbia and Simon Fraser University.
