Vancouver’s Westport Innovations Inc. (TSX:WPT) (NASDAQ:WPRT) announced this morning that it will be expanding its product line with the introduction of natural gas-powered versions of two Ford Super Duty Trucks.
The Ford F-450 and F-550 Super Duty trucks will join two other Ford products, the F-250 and F-350 trucks, that use Westport’s WiNG System.
“The timing in right,” said John Lapetz, vice-president, North America Vehicle Proprams, Westport LD. “Our CNG bi-fuel [CNG and natural gas] systems for Ford F-250 and F-350 trucks have been very well received and as a result, our customers are making increasing requests for customized options and natural gas trucks with higher gross weights.”
Westport claims the Westport WiNG System will save fleets 25-40% in fuel costs.
The trucks will be built at the company’s Westport Kentucky Integration Center (WKIC) in Louisville, which opened in June of this year. This facility is located next to Ford Motor Company’s Kentucky Truck Plant.
Westport Innovations plans to have the two new products available on the market by mid-2013.
