Anti-coal group Voters Taking Action on Climate Change (VTACC) is hosting a community meeting tonight in Surrey to discuss the proposed coal expansion at Fraser Surrey Docks.

The group has emerged amid growing pushback to coal expansion plans at two Port Metro Vancouver (PMV) terminals.

In January, PMV approved coal-handling upgrades at Neptune Terminals.

According to a statement from VTACC, tonight’s meeting will look at “an overview of the regional context of coal export expansion, a summary of the local and global impacts created by the coal port and coal trains, and a discussion of the ways residents can organize to express their opposition to this plan and support local governments in taking a stand against the port.”

The group expects residents from Surrey, Delta, White Rock, New Westminster, Blaine and Bellingham to attend.

According to the group, tonight’s meeting follows a “filled-to-capacity coal export forum” that was recently held in Crescent Beach.

The group is also planning a March 20 event in North Vancouver “to discuss Neptune Terminals coal port expansion.”
