Federal government representatives are set to officially launch the construction of the Port of Prince Rupert’s road, rail and utility corridor today.

The $90 million port expansion project is intended to provide road and rail access, together with the necessary utility services, to 1,000 acres of multi-user heavy industrial land at Ridley Island that is accessible via the deep-sea terminals at the port.

“Building capacity at the Port of Prince Rupert is necessary for the expansion of Canada’s trade with fast-growing Asian economies,” Prince Rupert Port Authority president and chief executive officer Don Krusel said last year when the federal government announced a $15 million contribution to the joint public- and private-sector investment project.

“This investment unlocks the sustainable development of port infrastructure and industrial waterfront that will benefit industries across Canada.”

The official launch will take place today at 12:45 p.m. aboard a marine vessel in the Port of Prince Rupert.
