A voluntary environmental standards program for shipping says that ports in Western Canada and the U.S. are showing more interest in the initiative.

Green Marine said six new organizations came on board in 2012, including Port Metro Vancouver and the Port of Seattle. Kinder Morgan’s Westridge Terminal in Burnaby has also announced it will join the program.

The program organisers said that based on the increased interest, it would create an advisory committee for the west coast.

The Green Marine program tracks shipping’s impact on marine ecosystems, greenhouse gas emissions, cargo handling, oil spill prevention measures and community relations. Its participants include ship owners, ports, terminals and seaway.

The organization will wrap up its 2013 conference in Vancouver today.
