What you see will be what you get under a new framework for airfare advertising, announced by the National Airlines Council of Canada (NACC) this morning.

The announcement was made by Denis Lebel, minister of transport, infrastructure and communities. The new price framework will see an end to advertised prices being listed exclusive of all taxes and fees. All-inclusive airfare advertising is now required under the Air Transportation Regulations, which means customers will see the total price of airline tickets, with no hidden fees.

“The new framework is a good example of industry and government working together,” said George Petsikas, president of the NACC. “We are pleased that the new rules provide clarity, maximize transparency and ultimately help the consumer make informed decisions.”

Lebel said, “We are protecting Canadian air travellers by helping them see, clearly and up front, the full cost of air tickets, so they can make informed travel choices.”

The rules will apply to all airline prices advertised in any media to the public for travel within or originating in Canada.

Airlines who do not comply with the new rules face fines of up to $25,000.

The National Airlines Council of Canada was founded by Air Canada, WestJet, Air Transat and Jazz Aviation LP.
