Port Metro Vancouver (PMV) has further delayed its decision on a permit application for Fraser Surrey Docks' proposed coal terminal expansion, the port announced February 19.
Fraser Surrey Docks submitted an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for the project to PMV in November. The assessment found no significant health or environmental risks related to the expansion.
Shortly after the EIA was submitted in November, PMV CEO Robin Silvester said the port was in the final stages of its decision-making process.
However, PMV issued a statement February 19 saying further study is needed.
"PMV continues to review the EIA submitted by Fraser Surrey Docks in November, and has identified areas that require further information, particularly around the assessment of the potential effects of the project on human health," the port said in the statement.
"Once PMV receives the final documentation from Fraser Surrey Docks, we will take this information, in addition to comments received to date and all other documents received, into consideration as part of the Project Review Process.
"A decision on the project permit will be made once this project review is complete."
The port said there will be no further formal comment period.
PMV's review thus far has included concerns and comments from First Nations and the public. Opposition to the expansion has been substantial, with residents, city councils across Metro Vancouver, health groups, and environmentalists, among other groups, expressing concerns.
