Port Metro Vancouver (PMV) has released a statement to “clarify” some of the information raised in an anti-coal motion that is going before Vancouver City Council today.

The motion, backed by Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson, raises concerns about health and environmental impacts of coal exports. It asks city staff to report back on “a bylaw to prevent the expansion of, or creation of, … coal infrastructure within the City of Vancouver.”

In PMV’s statement, released yesterday, the port outlines its efforts to reduce air emissions from port activities.

“Port Metro Vancouver is committed to long-term sustainability and has implemented several programs designed to integrate environmental, social and economic sustainability initiatives into our operations,” the port states.

The port says that it applies an Air Action Program to all projects in its jurisdiction, with an overarching goal to reduce air emissions wherever possible. It says that it “regularly” refers to health authorities those projects that cannot achieve emission reductions and have the potential for an increase in emissions.

The port emphasizes its role in facilitating the growth of trade and notes that coal has long been the port’s principal export, accounting for approximately 25% of its exports.

“Port Metro Vancouver recognizes that some citizens or groups may have concerns about the types of commodities traded through the port,” it says.

“While we are actively working towards sustainable development at the port, the debate about which commodities Canada trades should take place between citizens, industry and senior levels of government as it falls outside the scope of port jurisdiction.”

Council will discuss the coal motion today; a line-up of speakers is expected.
