The volume of cargo shipped through Port Metro Vancouver (PMV) was up in the first half of 2013 compared with the same period last year, the port announced August 27.

PMV’s cargo volume was 66.4 million tonnes in the first half of 2013 – an increase of 6% compared with the same period last year. This growth was driven in part by a strong 2013 cruise season and reflects high demand for Canadian commodities, PMV said.

“What we have seen to the mid-point in 2013 is continuing strong demand for Canadian natural resources, with all the major economic benefits that provides for the local and national economy,” said Robin Silvester, PMV president and CEO.

“We also continue to focus on environmental improvement and engaging with local communities most impacted by a busy and growing port.

“I am very proud that Port Metro Vancouver has recently been recognized by the Canadian Society of Corporate Secretaries for achievement in sustainability, ethics and environmental governance.”

Other PMV results announced include:

  • total foreign tonnage of 52.7 million tonnes – up 7% compared with last year; and
  • total domestic tonnage of 13.7 million tonnes – up 3%.
