Seaspan will be donating a total of $1.1 million over the next five years to three B.C. marine and port charitable organizations.

Victoria's Sail and Life Training Society (SALTS), the Vancouver Maritime Museum (VMM) and the Royal Canadian Marine Search & Rescue are the beneficiaries of the donation.

The donation is being made on the behalf of the Washington Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the Washington Group of companies. Seaspan is one of companies in the Washington Group.

"We are thrilled to be honouring three community partners that not only reflect the Washington Foundation's focus, they are also tied to the waters and rich history of B.C.'s marine industry," said Jonathan Whitworth, CEO of Seaspan.

Seaspan, based in North Vancouver, was awarded an $8 billion shipbuilding contract by the federal government in 2011 to build non-combat vessels for the Canadian navy.
