The Volvo Car Group unveiled its new bi-fuel car featuring Westport Innovations’ (TSX:WPT)’s natural gas fuel system at an automobile event in Sweden, Westport announced yesterday

The Volvo V60 Bi-Fuel car is able to run on either compressed natural gas or gasoline. The car boasts a 213-horsepower engine and a driving range of 1,120 km.

“Demand for natural gas vehicles in Sweden is expected to increase in response to the pending extension of the Government of Sweden alternative fuel tax incentive program,” said Westport executive vice-president Ian Scott.

“The launch of this product provides a new option for corporate and municipal fleet customers.”

Westport and Volvo are currently in talks to expand the car into other markets.

Westport is the exclusive supplier of natural gas fuel systems to Volvo. Since 2009, the Richmond-based company has been installing natural gas engines in the Volvo V70 estate car.

According to a press release, the number of natural gas vehicles in Sweden is expected to triple by 2018, from 31,792 to 92,657.
