Mark your calendars for Sunday, May 4th, 2025, as the community walks together at the 2025 Hike for Hospice, raising support for end-of-life care and bereavement services. This family-friendly event raises crucial funds for Burnaby Hospice Society (BHS), a cornerstone of end-of-life care and grief support in Burnaby since 1986. BHS provides essential, no-cost support to individuals and families facing terminal illness and loss.

The 2025 Hike for Hospice is an opportunity to celebrate and honour loved ones, raise awareness for hospice care and support BHS so they can continue offering free end-of-life and grief services to those in need.

Participants of all ages can look forward to a day of community activities, including a BBQ lunch, live music, family-friendly activities and a silent auction.

Compassionate end-of-life care

Located at 4535 Kingsway, BHS offers palliative support to individuals nearing the end of their lives in hospice, hospital, long-term care facilities and private local residences, in partnership with Fraser Health. Services extend not only to patients but their families, ensuring they receive support as they navigate one of life's most difficult experiences.

The core philosophy of the Society is to work to fulfill the emotional and spiritual needs of patients, ensuring they can live as fully as possible in their final days. BHS offers services such as companionship, pet therapy, music therapy, legacy work and more. These services are designed to enhance the patient’s well-being and help them maintain dignity during their final moments.

Grief and bereavement

BHS offers bereavement programs to help people cope with grief, providing support with compassion and understanding. These services, which include counselling, support groups, grief workshops and walking groups, are available to all Burnaby residents, regardless of where the loved one received care or passed away.

Community support

A key component of Burnaby Hospice Society’s ability to offer its services at no cost is the income generated from the thrift store. Located at 6843 Kingsway in Burnaby, the store provides approximately 65% of the funding needed for the Society’s programs.

The thrift store offers a wide variety of gently used items, including clothing, furniture and household goods. With all proceeds directly supporting the mission of BHS, the store's success depends on the generous donations from the community, which help sustain these vital services.

Breaking barriers

Burnaby Hospice Society is committed to encouraging open dialogue around death, a topic that is too often left unaddressed. Conversations about end-of-life care can be difficult, but the Society aims to break down these barriers and help individuals and families prepare for death in a supportive environment. By providing education and raising awareness, BHS hopes to reduce the stigma surrounding death and offer much-needed support to those affected.

Through its free programs and services, Burnaby Hospice Society is making a significant impact in the community, helping individuals and families navigate the most difficult times in their lives.
