Ballard to sell fuel cell stacks to Indian bus maker

Vancouver hydrogen fuel cell pioneer Ballard Power Systems (TSX:BLD) has signed a memorandum of understanding with India’s Tata Motors to supply fuel cell stacks for zero-emission buses.

Vancouver hydrogen fuel cell pioneer Ballard Power Systems (TSX:BLD) has signed a memorandum of understanding with India’s Tata Motors to supply fuel cell stacks for zero-emission buses.

Under the agreement, Ballard will supply Tata Motors with 12 of its FCvelocity-1100 fuel cell stacks, which will power buses for demonstration projects in various Indian cities. Ballard plans to deliver the cell stacks in 2012 and 2013.

Friday’s announcement followed news in December 2011 that Ballard had shipped three of its 150-KW FCvelocity-HD6 fuel cell power modules to TuttoTrasporti in Brazil.

Earlier this month, Tata Motors displayed the first Ballard fuel stack-powered bus built in India at Auto Expo 2012 in New Delhi.

“We strive to be leaders in the use of technology, while maintaining very high standards of product quality,” P.M. Telang, Tata Motors’ managing director, said in a press release.

“Working with technology companies such as Ballard only strengthens our ability to design and market the wheels of a greener world here in India.”

Ballard CEO John Sheridan said, “This is additional validation of the mature state of our products and of the growing global market for clean energy transit buses.”
