Burnaby paver forced to shutter plant in Whistler

A Burnaby-based paving company is being steamrolled out of Whistler.

A Burnaby-based paving company is being steamrolled out of Whistler.

Last week, the resort town’s lawyers, Lidstone & Co., issued a cease and desist order to Alpine Paving, notifying the company that it had until May 13 to shutter its asphalt plant there.

The news comes after nearly two years of controversy surrounding the plant, which is located near Whistler’s Cheakamus Crossing neighbourhood.

The municipality claims the plant, which has operated since the 1990s, is located in an area that violates zoning bylaws.

The municipality recently considered a rezoning bylaw to move the plant but public outcry defeated the proposal.

Now, Whistler has said failure to comply with the May 13 deadline “will result in council consideration of all the enforcement powers it possesses.”

Alpine owner Frank Silveri could not be reached for comment.

The municipality is also staying mum about the issue, preferring to post a statement on its website saying it would not comment on legal matters.
