The National Energy Board has called for a public hearing to be held later in February for a new natural gas pipeline extension north of Fort Nelson, B.C.

Alberta’s NOVA Gas Transmission Ltd. (NGTL) – a subsidiary of TransCanada Corporation (TSX:TRP) – is proposing to extend Alberta’s natural gas pipeline system in northern B.C. and northwestern Alberta.

It is part of a $310 million project that includes the acquisition of the Encana Ekwan Pipeline, and construction of the Horn River Mainline (Cabin Section), a 72-kilometre section running from the Ekwan Pipeline to a natural gas processing facility in the Cabin area.

The Komie north section pipeline extension would run approximately 110 kilometres north of Fort Nelson. The first leg of the project is a 97-kilometre long, 36-inch pipeline from the new Fortune Creek meter station, with a tie-in point on the Horn River mainline near the Encana Cabin Gas Plant.

NGTL wants to start clearing work in the winter of 2012 and 2013, with construction to start in the fall and winter of 2013 and 2014. The pipeline would be in operation by the second quarter of 2014.

Anyone interested in learning more about the proposal can attend a public information meeting February 22 in Fort Nelson. The meeting runs from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Northern Rockies Regional Municipality Town Hall, 5319 – 50th Avenue South.

Anyone wishing to make formal submissions must do so by March 6. Application forms are available on the NEB site www.neb-one.gc.ca.
