The wife of a woman killed in the 2009 Saturna Island float plane crash is suing Seair Seaplanes Ltd. and pilot Francois St. Pierre for damages.

According to documents filed in BC Supreme Court May 4, Shaira Holman is suing the defendants for general and special damages pursuant to the Family Compensation Act for the death of her wife, Catherine Holman.

Of the plane’s eight passengers, six – including Holman and a baby – were killed when the float plane stalled, crashed and filled with water. Two of four doors jammed, trapping the occupants.

Shaira Holman has launched the action on her own behalf, as well as on behalf of Catherine’s parents, Peter White and Lois White.

The suit argues that the accident arose from the defendants’ negligence. No allegations have been proven in court.

Last month, the Transportation Safety Board released a report on the crash. It recommended that float planes be equipped with doors and windows that pop off easily after a crash, and that passengers should wear life jackets.
