Seaspan Corp. (NYSE:SSW) continues marshalling a rapidly expanding fleet of containerships to take advantage of global trade opportunities with orders for six new vessels placed since the end of March.

This is in addition to the eight new 2,500 TEU vessels it commissioned in 2006. The company also acquired four 4,800 TEU vessels from A.P. Moller-Maersk A/S in a $160 million deal last October.

The six new ships will include four 4,250 TEU vessels and two more 2,500 TEU ships. China's Jiangsu Yangzijiang Shipbuilding Co. Ltd. has been contracted to build the six vessels for a combined contract total of $357.2 million.

Seaspan's fleet consists of 47 containerships, 26 existing and 21 more to be delivered over the next three years. Seaspan's share price closed at US$28 on Thursday, just off its 52-week high of $28.06. Seaspan's 52-week low is $19.65.
